One misconception about felons and firearms is that felons are never allowed to own or possess one. This is not true. This is not to say there aren’t restrictions. In Texas, you must wait no less than five years after your sentence has been discharged – not excluding parole. The firearm must be possessed only in the home and as a means of self-protection.
The punishment for a felon in possession of a firearm beyond these restrictions is a felony charge punishable by as many as 10 years in prison. Another consideration is that these laws are applicable only in the state of Texas. The federal government may prosecute you for felony possession in federal court.
